OB-X: The Foundation of Analog Power
The OB-X’s voice architecture features two oscillators, each capable of generating sawtooth or square waves that feed into the signature Oberheim 2-pole low-pass filter. For inharmonic and bell-like tones, the OB-X offered cross-modulation, a feature absent in its successor, the OB-Xa. This unique capability allows for complex sonic exploration. Additionally, the OB-X provides a Unison mode, stacking all voices for a single, powerful monophonic layer of up to 16 oscillators and 8 filters, perfect for creating thick, cutting leads.
OB-Xa: Evolution and Expansion
The OB-Xa refines the OB-X formula, trading the FM cross-modulation for a pitch envelope control. This allows the filter envelope to modulate the oscillator pitch, a powerful tool for crafting expressive brass-like attack scoops. But the OB-Xa doesn’t stop there it introduces a selectable 4-pole filter alongside the standard 2-pole low-pass filter, expanding your tonal palette for richer and warmer sounds.
